Can You Still Get an Abortion in FL?

If you are a Florida resident and facing an unplanned pregnancy, the recent overturn of Roe v. Wade probably has you wondering what your options are. Current state laws stipulate that abortion is legal in Florida up to 15 weeks gestational age.

Read this article for more information on how Roe v. Wade impacted Florida, what this means for abortion access in our state, and what to do next if you’re considering an abortion.

What It Means That Roe v. Wade Was Overturned

In 1973, Roe v. Wade was passed, which ruled that elective abortion was considered a federal right protected by the U.S. Constitution.

When the current Supreme Court revisited this decision, they determined that there was no historical precedent and that the right to an abortion is not found in the U.S. Constitution.

They struck down Roe as a result and, in doing so, handed over the authority to protect or regulate abortion to each of the 50 states.

Does Florida Currently Grant Abortion Access?

Florida law allows elective abortion up to 15 weeks gestational age. After that point, there are medical exceptions, such as if the woman’s life is in danger or if the pregnancy is not viable.

Before having a medication abortion or surgical abortion, protect your health by confirming far along you are. The FDA does not recommend taking the abortion pill after 70 days of pregnancy.

How Do I Know How Far Along I Am?

Healthcare professionals use an ultrasound exam to confirm you are pregnant and how far along you are. This is also called gestational age.

How Much Do Out-of-State Abortions Cost?

If you are later than 15 weeks along in your pregnancy and are considering traveling out of state for an elective abortion, but it’s not covered by your insurance, you may wonder about the out-of-pocket cost.

Without insurance, abortions can range between $600 and $2000 dollars. This does not include the cost of transportation or lodging.
