Will Insurance Pay for the Abortion Pill?

Will Insurance Pay for the Abortion Pill?

For some, facing an unplanned pregnancy can feel like a real-life nightmare. When life goes off script, it can be easy to make decisions based solely on fear and worry.

As you consider which pregnancy choice is best for you, it’s important to remember you’re not alone, and there are resources available to help you during this difficult time.

Here at First Coast Women’s Services, we believe women should feel empowered as they choose the best option for them. That’s why we’re passionate about equipping women with as much knowledge as possible throughout their decision-making process, including information regarding the abortion process.

If you’re curious about the costs associated with abortion, look no further!

Will my insurance pay for the abortion pill?

Both Medicaid insurance and health plans offered under the state of Florida’s Affordable Care Act will only cover abortion procedures in the cases of rape, incest, or life endangerment. The state does not require private abortion plans to cover abortion, however, you can purchase an additional rider to cover the procedure.

Because the rules regarding abortion coverage depend on your state, be sure to do research specific to your location.

How much is the abortion pill out of pocket?

While women feel as though abortion will be the most financially beneficial option for them, the procedure can be quite costly. You can expect to pay around $500 for the abortion pill and early surgical abortions, and upwards of several thousand dollars for second and third-trimester surgical abortions.

Can I expect to pay for anything else surrounding the abortion?

The abortion pill is a serious medical procedure and, like other procedures, women should be prepared for additional costs that might come their way.

In addition to the cost of your abortion, you should be prepared to pay for an ultrasound. In the state of Florida, abortion providers are required to perform an ultrasound and offer the patient the option to view the image. This is a great opportunity for you to gather information about your pregnancy, including the age, location, and viability — each of these plays a role in determining the type of abortion you might be eligible for.

Additionally, an ultrasound will allow your doctor to see if there are any conditions that could lead to abortion complications. Thankfully, ultrasounds are free at your local pregnancy center, First Coast Women’s Services!

In the case of complications related to the abortion procedure, you can expect to pay for any necessary surgeries and medications.

Unfortunately, the costs of abortion can extend beyond financial costs. Women who take the abortion pill may also have an increased risk of experiencing mental health issues related to the trauma of abortion.

Where can I find affordable healthcare?

The reality is, pregnancy can be expensive, regardless of which option you choose. Thankfully, there’s help!

Here at First Care Women’s Services, we believe women should be able to make the decision that’s best for them — not the one that they feel forced into.
