Is Adoption a Good Option for Your Pregnancy?

Is Adoption a Good Option for Your Pregnancy?

When facing an unplanned pregnancy, especially in less-than-ideal circumstances, adoption is a good option to consider.

While many women feel hesitant to look into adoption because they don’t like the idea of “giving up” their child, it is a loving and courageous choice for a mother to make. The birth-mother is honored, respected, and taken care of throughout her pregnancy and is totally in control of all decision-making in the adoption process.

If you think you might be pregnant, the first step to take is to confirm your pregnancy with an ultrasound. Click below to schedule your FREE ultrasound at one of our Centers.

If you are willing to carry your child but are unsure if you will be able to care for them after birth for any number of reasons, adoption may be right for you. Here are some things to consider:

Types of adoption

The world of adoption has changed drastically in recent years. Birth parents get to be in control of the adoption plan and can choose between three types:

  1. Open – In an open adoption, you can choose your child’s family and can also openly communicate with them about your child through letters and pictures and possibly even through phone calls or visits. Your child will grow up knowing who you are.
  2. Partially open– In a partially open adoption, you can choose the type of family your child grows up in. You may learn how your child is doing through pictures and letters that the adoption agency shares with you. You will usually not know your child’s full name or location
  3. Closed – In a closed adoption, also sometimes called a confidential adoption, the adoption agency or lawyer will choose your child’s new family. You and the child’s adoptive family will not know details about one another’s identities. The agency may share medical information necessary to help the adoptive family care for the child.

Your circumstances

If your circumstances are not what you would like them to be to become a parent, adoption may be a good option for you. Depending on your financial resources, support system, emotional or medical situation, ability to commit, and more, you may not feel prepared to care for your child after birth. No matter the reasons, adoption is a brave and selfless option.

One of the beauties of modern adoption is that the birthmother is well taken care of during the process. There is funding available for women considering adoption even during the decision making process and before she chooses an adoptive family for her child. If she ultimately decides not to choose adoption, any funding she has received does not need to be repaid. Once an adoptive family is chosen by the birthmother, medical bills and other pregnancy-related coats are covered by the adoptive family, making it easier for the birthmother to healthfully carry the child, no matter her circumstances.

Your goals

Additionally, adoption may be a good option depending on what your goals are for the future. If becoming a parent at this time does not line up with your goals, adoption may be right for you as it’s a loving way to plan for the future of your child while also planning for your own future.
